Why Etiquette? If you speak French you’ll know! I chose Etiquette for my photography as it sounds a lot like my name in French. It’s a pun I love and causes a lot of giggles in France from young and old alike. Étiquette in English is used to refer to deportment or decorum, but in France it means ‘label’, ‘ticket’ or ‘sticker’. So yes.. here I am Ms Sticker!
My name is Hetty Kate (Hetty is my first name) and like everyone, I am many things to many different people. But in this space I am a photographer simply looking at things around me, attempting to somehow condense fleeting moments of equilibrium into an image. I find these moments are as swift and delicate as a butterfly, and spending time in solitude to create images I find beautiful is my meditation and healing. I spend a great deal of time observing symmetry, geometry and perspective, and on occasion I try to capture the absurdity of life. Of which, you must admit, there is a lot. I am always searching for something and I hope, in my photography, I will find it.

I’ve been a professional jazz vocalist for over a decade, and I perform all around the world at clubs and festivals, large and small. Starting in my teens I worked as a photographic and artist’s model for many years and moved into TV commercials in my late 20’s. In 2017 I moved from my home in Melbourne, Australia to Paris, France amidst a hot flush of BREXIT and bravery, and I weathered the pandemic in Paris alone in a small apartment with nothing but a mouse for company. Although I’ve taken photos for years, like many the lockdown was where my image obsession bloomed once again and I’ve begun to lean in. It’s a relief (certainly after this long in my industry) to be able to turn the camera away from myself and become the observer, rather than the observed.
I come from a reasonably dysfunctional and thinly spread creative family of artists, crafters, builders, bakers, mechanics and writers – and though I have played and studied music since I was a young child, my college studies were in design – graphic, digital and interior.
