Welcome to the Hotel-Pension Funk. Asta Sofie Amalie Nielsen was a Danish silent film actress who was one of the most popular leading ladies of the 1910s and one of the first international movie stars. Seventy of Nielsen’s 74 films were made in Germany where she was known simply as Die Asta. This unique hotel was created from her majestic Charlottenburg apartment in Berlin, encased in a looming Art Nouveau building from the 1830’s.

When I arrived I collected my key from a nearby cafe, and let myself in. The halls were silent as I walked the corridors looking for my room I could feel a fizz as if I was slowly immersing myself in a sweet champagne cocktail. I never saw a soul, but surely there are echoes from all the guests still walking the halls of the Hotel-Pension Funk.. a delight.
