Israël

I had been waiting to visit Israel for over a decade, for almost fifteen years. In Australia it seemed so far away, difficult to get to, expensive, like trying to visit the moon. At the end of 2021 – and out of the blue – an opportunity to visit fell in my lap, and soon – due to covid cancellations and other serendipitous things – it grew from a few days to spending almost an entire month in Tel Aviv. I was there to sing and work, which was so great, but for me it was much more than that. It was the closing of a circle. In the quiet moments, as I walked the city by myself and ran for miles along the beach, looking at the horizon as the sun kissed the sea at eventide.. in the quiet moments as I stood on a mountain, looking out over Galilee.. in the quiet moments, as I walked through the old city of Jerusalem in the dark – with prayers from the mosques ringing out overhead.. everything so foreign, but also not.. a little part of myself fractured off and lay down to sleep. She lives there now, that small part, and if I close my eyes I’m there. Quietly walking and watching.
